The band soon landed a record deal with Rebel Monster and released The Strength/The Sound/The Songs. From then on, Volbeat began an almost constant work schedule, including performances with Europe's and America's biggest metal acts, as well as winning a number of genre and industry awards for their music. Volbeat consolidated this early win with a semifinal appearance on the Danish talent show competition Live Contest. Reception was lukewarm to the initial release, but the group's second demo, Beat the Meat, was an instant success, getting airplay on European radio. Poulsen felt it was time to start over, and his concept of giving straight-up heavy metal a more trad rock flourish ( Poulsen was a big Elvis fan, if that is any indication) was at the heart of Volbeat.īringing together members Franz Gottschalk on guitar (he would be replaced by Thomas Bredahl in 2006), Jon Larsen on drums, and Anders Kjølholm on bass, vocalist and guitarist Poulsen was able to release the band's first demo, Volbeat, in 2002. Poulsen's earlier group, Dominus, was a giant in Danish metal, releasing four albums in ten years, and making a lasting impression on the scene. Volbeat was founded by former Dominus leader Michael Poulsen in October of 2001, who became a dominant force not only in Danish metal but in Danish rock as a whole, charting albums and singles on a regular basis. They hit number two in Denmark with their seventh studio album, 2019's more mainstream Rewind, Replay, Rebound, before returning with 2021's Servant of the Mind, which signaled a return to their trademark heaviness.

Whatever we do, we want just to make good-quality stuff.” It’s very important for me to show that we still have the power and the ability to write beautiful melodies and some aggression and rock and metal songs. So whatever happens, this band will continue. But, basically, at the moment, I’m thinking the main songwriters are Axel now and me. And it looks like MASTERPLAN, basically, is my main band, and whoever will sing and whoever will play in the band, I’m happy with. I think this band always needs some very bad moments to some great songs. If you see, the first album just came out after a big turbulence - leaving HELLOWEEN, Uli and me. In an August 2011 interview with the Czech web portal, Grapow stated about MASTERPLAN‘s numerous lineup changes: “I think it’s always difficult in this band, I guess. We’re still having the typical sound with melodies, but the drummer is amazing and plays a lot of crazy shit!” I want to get a little bit more modern, as the sound we have was created ten years ago. In a recent interview with Metal Shock Finland, MASTERPLANguitarist/leader Roland Grapow stated about the band’s new CD: “We are not leaving the MASTERPLAN path too much, but everything we have - the melodic part and a little bit progressive - I would say we’re a little bit more powerful and I’m also mixing the album this time.
